Local Firefighters
Participate In "Controlled Burn"
We at FGS
felt privileged to observe local firefighters "do their
thing" on Saturday July 14, 2007 - and battle a fire in
an abandoned property. Unlike the usual fire call, this
time the teams knew exactly where the fire started, and they
knew exactly who started it... Martin Barry,
Pennsylvania State Fire Instructor.
The home, which was donated
by FGS owner John C. Sobeck, was used to offer
first-hand, experience-based training to area firefighters.
Initially, only sections were ignited and controlled. By
mid-day, the entire home was engulfed with flames until
nothing was left but a partially standing chimney. Throughout
the session, firefighters took turns entering the inferno, and
upon exit, would have their vital signs checked by local EMS
personnel.
Members of Jackson
Township, Plymouth Township, Franklin Township, Trucksville,
Shavertown, Luzerne, Kingston and Mount Zion Fire Departments
participated in the session, while Chief Bill Eck of
the Trucksville Fire Department sponsored the event.
Throughout the day, Chief
Eck was seen buzzing in and out of the burning
structure, and continuously directing and overseeing his crews
in an effortless and professional manner. As a matter of fact,
all of the firefighters in attendance, regardless of rank,
also handled themselves in a professional manner.
We
would like to applaud the efforts of our brave local fire
departments as they continuously strive to update their fire
fighting skills. These
acquired skills safeguard the overall welfare of the
residents of all our local communities.

First General To
Clean Midtown Village Clock
While the city of Wilkes
Barre is "brightening" the streets of Wilkes Barre
by erecting new streetlights, FGS will be doing
its part by donating its cleaning services to help restore Wilkes-Barre’s
Midtown Village Clock.
While a final cleaning date
has not yet been finalized, First General Services will be
utilizing its novel Soda-Blast Cleaning System
to renew the finish of the clock and to improve the overall
appearance.
The System utilizes
a baking soda mixture applied under various air pressure
settings to clean and deodorize surfaces marred by smoke,
water, chemicals, graffiti, etc., without damaging the
original entity. It
can be used on a variety of surfaces including pavement,
concrete, wood, metal, glass; hard, as well as some porous
surfaces.
FGS has had
over a dozen opportunities within the past year to apply this
unique cleaning process in jobs that required timely cleaning
and deodorizing of a variety of surface types.
It has been used in commercial and residential
applications, both indoors and outdoors to facilitate the
cleaning and deodorizing processes involved in a professional
restoration.
