Joke of the Day...                                                        :)

"You have to stay in shape... My grandmother, she started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She's 97 today and we don't know where the hell she is."

Disaster Recovery Plans

Disaster Recovery Plans (DRP) are becoming a priority like never before. More and more businesses and homeowners are beginning to understand the importance of preparing for a disaster before it happens.

It is unrealistic for us to feel that we are safe from perils such as fire, flood, explosion, and computer malfunction (to mention a few). Being prepared for serious incidents such as these will keep you one step ahead of the game.

What if you had a fire that resulted in the total loss of your investment property? Would you remember every last possession that you own?  Chances are, no. Having a DRP in a situation like this would be of great benefit. Within minutes you will be able to provide a pre-loss inventory list to your insurance carrier, whereas it may have taken you weeks or even months if you hadn’t been prepared. This will allow you to settle your claim faster, more legitimately, and with more efficiency.

Do-it-yourself inventory programs are available, or you can hire an outside professional to do the inventory for you. When First General Services is contracted to create a pre-loss inventory list, you will be a given a detailed inventory list of each item in the property, the replacement cost of each item, and a photograph of each item that was inventoried. It is up to the property owner to determine the extent of detail for each inventory report.

Since there are so many potentially disastrous events that can occur, it is hard to pinpoint what will best suit your current situation. Below are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Risk assessment: Determine what incident will most likely affect your property.

  • Prevention: The best way to prepare for disaster is by avoiding disaster. Therefore, look for potential problems and correct them.

  • Maintenance: Changes to organizations occur all the time - it is important that your DRP reflects these changes.

  • Off-site back-up systems for you computer server.

  • Additional endorsements on homeowners insurance (i.e.; sump pump coverage, land slides, sewer backup, jewelry, inflation protection endorsements etc...) The annual additional cost for these endorsements can be offset in the case of even a small covered loss.

Remember, whatever the ultimate cause of the disaster, First General Services stands prepared to assist in the recovery.  For additional information on services available, feel free to contact our expert professional restoration staff at: (570) 824-0680.

First General  in “Controlled Burn”

John C. Sobeck, President & Owner of First General Services of NE Pa., recently purchased a tract of land that included a vacant house in Franklin Township.  As part of his personal commitment to community development, John has donated the property on behalf of First General Services to the use of local fire departments as a training resource.

Taking the lead on the training/practice event is the Trucksville Fire Department and their Fire Chief, Bill Eck.  Bill is currently enrolling local fire departments to participate in the scheduled “burn” on July 14th.  With a statewide sign-up process, it is anticipated that in excess of forty local firefighters will benefit from the training offered as part of this controlled burn.

The house at 1525 West Eighth Street in Wyoming (across from Carverton Auto), is conveniently located in close proximity to many of the local fire departments participating in the main event.  Special training sessions are scheduled for June 26th and July 10th, beginning at 6:30 PM.

Chief Eck, in discussing the opportunity for the training said, “Our fire department and other local companies continually strive to improve our ability to respond to fire events. In line with this, we are ever so grateful to John Sobeck and First General Services for their thoughtful generosity that will afford us this opportunity to improve our firefighting skills and better serve the residents of our communities.”

John Sobeck, in reviewing his donation of the house, insisted that, “this is an opportunity to give back to the Community and specifically to the fire departments that we cooperate with on an almost daily basis, and to improving the safety of our nearby residents.  All too often we at First General witness the tragic aftermath of residential fires.  It should be priority #1 that we all work to improve public safety measures in our local communities.”

The cooperative efforts of First General Services and the local fire departments will improve the ability of the committed fire fighters to safeguarding the welfare of local residents and their property from fire losses.
