Fire Safety Tips for
You and Your Family
Fire safety
starts with you. The fact of the matter is, the more prepared
you are, the safer you and your family will be. Below are some
suggestions that can get you moving in the right direction...
The first
thing to do is to equip your home with fire safety equipment.
Ideally, there should be smoke detectors in all bedrooms,
hallways, the kitchen, and the basement. Detectors should be
tested every six months, and batteries changed to ensure that
they are functioning properly. Fire extinguishers should be
easily accessible and located on each level of the home,
including the garage.
For additional
security, an alarm system that automatically alerts the
police, ambulance and fire departments can be installed. These
units generally have the added bonus of a panic button
that can be pushed manually in case of an emergency. If you
are building a new home, you may consider installing a
sprinkler system that will turn on automatically if there is a
fire.
Most
importantly, create an escape plan with your family. This may
be the difference between life and death one day. At least
three escape routes should be created incase any of the exits
are blocked. A rope ladder should be kept in the upper levels
of the home incase you cannot reach the lower level. Teach
your children the importance of crawling on the floor when
there is smoke and feeling a door for heat before opening it.
No matter how
old or young you are, a trip to your local fire department
may
not be a bad idea. They can suggest fire safety tips that you
and I may never have thought about.
You can also find fire safety
tips on the web. For
those of you with children, I
recommend they visit www.firesafety.gov/kids/flash.shtm
so they can learn about fire safety and
play games at the same time.
REMEMBER:
Knowledge is power, and preparation is the key! The more
prepared you are, the safer you and your family will be.
