March
2008 Weather Tests First General Services' Capabilities
The old adage
that March "comes in like a lion and goes out like a
lamb", has proven ever so true for the "storm
troopers" of First General Services, at
least the "lion" part.
March 2008 has evidenced two (2) very large
commercial losses resulting in at least part from the almost
spring like weather pattern.
March 6th brought a significant combined
storm water and sewer back-up at the Mt. Carmel Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center in Mt. Carmel, Pa. The facility with in excess of 200 patients, suffered almost
total inundation of its 44,000 square foot first floor,
including patient rooms, administrative offices, community
rooms, hallways, kitchen and physical therapy areas.
First General Services needed to
mobilize both the Wilkes-Barre and Bloomsburg staff to
address this serious loss.
Working throughout the weekend, the combined
personnel gained control of the situation and restored all
basic facility services by March 10th.
Cleaning services and demolition work continued
throughout the week, enabling the reconstruction efforts to
be initiated immediately thereafter.
In addition to the mitigation work, FGS
was contracted to complete a significant part of the
reconstruction work. Under
the capable direction of our new Bloomsburg General Manager,
Sean Fogarty, Sean brought to bear his considerable
background in emergency situations and greatly facilitated
the coordination of effort between the combined team of FGS,
facility staff and subcontractors.
At the time of this writing, all patients have been
returned to their living environment and while
reconstruction estimates have not been completed, the
initial Emergency Services work alone totaled in excess of
$250,000.00.
The second major event occurred March 21st
at the Great Wolf Lodge and Resort located in Tannersville,
Pa. FGS received
the call for assistance due to a strong and long standing
relationship developed through FGS previous
work experiences at the Lodge.
A full collapse of the ceiling in a 1,000 square foot
portion of the dining area together with areas below the
dining room that suffered water damage from the sprinkler
system, were addressed by FGS personnel
utilizing our specialized state of the art equipment.
Due to the nature of the Resort's business,
assigned FGS staff committed in excess of 35
hours each over a span of 46 hours, lending further credence
to FGS ability to "step up to the plate". In total several hundred man hours were devoted to this major
loss, with minimal disruption to the activities offered
guests at the Resort.
