First General Services Responds to
Large Commercial Loss
Located in downtown
Pittston,
Pa.,
the Sapphire Salon & Destination Spa, owned by Larry and
Angie Moran, offers a relaxing atmosphere that you would
expect to find in a big city.
Larry and Angie bring the
dedication and perseverance necessary for a small business
to thrive and become successful.
Unfortunately, several years ago, the Spa experienced a
devastating electrical fire that burned the business to the
ground, with everything being lost.
With the support and
contributions of friends, clients and vendors they were able
to relocate to another smaller location.
Contributions of supplies, hair
dryers, and even a computer assisted in getting them up and
running.
Employees took to wearing shirts
emblazoned with “Unstoppable” to boost and maintain morale.
In 2005,
due to the continued patronage of long-term clients, the Spa
moved to the “Castle” that was designed and built with
renovations completed by family and friends.
Because of their previous
‘nightmare’, new policy dictated multiple inspections on a
nightly basis to ensure that electronics were shutoff.
In early
2007, tragedy struck again.
The Spa suffered another fire
loss, not quite as devastating as the earlier, but one that
caused extensive smoke, water and odor damage.
Both Larry and Angie felt as if
they were reliving the earlier loss that they had slowly
been overcoming.
First General Services
was called to address the emergency situation.
In describing the damage as
“horrendous”, Angie noted that
FGS Project
Manager
Joe Simon
“helped us see the light at the
end of the tunnel.
He made us feel
the damage was not as bad as it
seemed.”
This was of paramount concern
since the Spa’s primary goal was to ensure that their
employee and clients were in a safe and healthy, yet
relaxing environment.
Following
extensive work on the part of
First General Services’
professional staff, the Spa re-opened and continued in
satisfying the wants and needs of its clientele.
Bringing all of its long-term
experience and professional competence,
First General Services
helped restore the business to pre-loss condition.
In fact, as testimony to their
dedication and hard work, the Spa received the
Pittston Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the
Year
Award for 2007.
In allowing
the Spa to re-open in a timely and customer friendly
fashion,
First General Services
once again proved that
“One call can do it all!!”
FGS’
Cleaning Division Gains Stature
Over the past 18 months, the Cleaning Division of
First General Services of NE Pa. has
gained increased credibility in its effort to establish
itself as the premier service of its kind in the restoration
business in the region.
Under the capable direction of Special Projects
Coordinator Diane Wright, the five member full-time staff
has grown ever more capable of handling both residential and
commercial fire, water and smoke losses.
Functioning as an integral component of the larger scale
restoration effort of FGS, the
division is involved in virtually every FGS
project, addressing all aspects of contents inventory
(including pack-outs and pack-ins), cleaning on site or in
the FGS facility in Wilkes-Barre,
and ultimately, following post construction work.
Trained staff also assist in certain aspects of mold
remediation projects.
Staff members are trained in the use of computer-based bar
coding (for contents inventory) as part of the use of the
JPP Pack-Out Inventory (POI) System.
The use of this System allows for the accurate
tracking of the location of all contents in both residential
and commercial losses throughout the restoration work,
including the final return to the original site.
The System also facilitates the development of a
complete inventory of items to be replaced or cleaned for
insurance reimbursement purposes.
Special services of the Cleaning Division include the use of
steam cleaning, provision of carpet and drapery cleaning,
electronics cleaning through use of the Odell System, and
ultrasonic cleaning equipment.
In addition, FGS also maintains a
commercial size laundry on site in Wilkes-Barre.
FGS staff is trained in fire,
water and smoke remediation techniques for applications
requiring such skills.
Overall the Cleaning Division is
a vital component of all contents issues ranging from
replacement to cleaning/restoration determinations for
contents projects in which FGS
becomes involved.
Ultimately, the work of the Cleaning Division allows
for a speedy return to normalcy for the affected property
owner.

Joke
of the Day...
The
Italian
Tomato
Garden
An old Italian lived alone in
New Jersey. He
wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was
very difficult work, as the ground was hard.
His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in
prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and
described his predicament:
Dear Vincent,
I am feeling pretty sad, because it looks like I won't
be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I'm just
getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know
if you were here my troubles would be over. I know you
would be happy to dig the plot for me, like in the old
days.
Love,
Papa
A few days later he received a
letter from his son.
Dear Pop,
Don't dig up that garden. That's where the bodies are
buried.
Love,
Vinnie
At 4 a.m. the next morning, FBI
agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire
area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the
old man and left.
That same day the old man received another letter from
his son.
Dear Pop,
Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That's the best I
could do.
